Stop Negative Thinking – 5 Practical Tips

Negative thinking is always toxic. It paralyses you and stops you solving problems, it distorts your view of the world and it’s the ultimate vicious circle – the more negatively we think about things, the worse we feel, and the more negative our thoughts become. It is therefore in your very best interests to stop negative thinking as quickly as possible, and the following tips will show you how.

1. Who’s In Charge Anyway?

Your mind is rather like your car. It can be comfortable, fuel-efficient and get you from A to B in record time, but it’s not actually doing the driving. You are! You are ultimately in charge of your own mind, and you’re responsible for your own thoughts. So the first step towards thinking more positively is to accept that fact. Make a conscious decision to stop negative thinking by challenging it as it arises. Remind yourself who’s in charge every time a negative thought crosses your mind.

2. Use Affirmations

Following on from the above point, you can program yourself to think positively by using affirmations. It’s said that Bruce Lee imagined burning his negative thoughts in a fire. You may not be able to achieve that level of discipline, but you can achieve a similar effect by repeating positive affirmations to yourself throughout the day. Try something along the lines of "I am in charge of my own thoughts and I choose to think positively."

3. Choose Your Friends Wisely

Misery loves company, or so they say, so stop negative thinking by surrounding yourself with positive people. If your current social circle do nothing but moan, complain and rail against the state of the world, you need to seriously consider getting yourself a new social circle. Thoughts are contagious, so make sure you’re in a position to catch positive ones.

4. Mind Your Language

Avoid musty thinking, "coulda, woulda, shoulda" syndrome, and the big but. Words like "must", "should" and "but" carry the seeds of negative thinking within them – "I really must get around to calling my friend. I know I should. But I’m really busy right now." "I could take that class I’ve always been interested in, but I know I’ll probably fail". Instead, use more direct and decisive language to stop negative thinking. "Can" and "will" are great positive words to use, because they inspire action – "I will phone my friend right now", "I can take that course, starting this week".

5. Be Realistically Realistic

Of course, negative things happen from time to time, but negative thinking is always an extra problem on top of that. To be truly realistic and positive, you need to accept criticism when it is justified, and put bad events in their proper context. Ask yourself "what can I learn from this?"
